One long table in Brussels, and the decisions Europe can no longer put off

The leaders arrived with the same agenda they left with last time: Ukraine, energy, and who pays. What has changed is how little room is left to keep deferring the answers.

Market · Football money

English football took in about £9 billion last season. What share of clubs in the top five divisions were still loss-making?

94 percent: 116 clubs were loss-making in the Independent Football Regulator's review, and 32 could not survive more than 30 days without owner funding. Read the full story and its sources.

Slide to your guess: how many times more revenue does the average Premier League club earn than the average Championship club?

3.0x
The measured gap is 8.7x for 2024-25, up from 2.7x in 1992-93, the first Premier League season. Fall out of the top flight and average revenue drops by about £70 million. See how the pyramid adds up.
World · Time itself

The leap second has been abolished. What replaces it?

A leap hour. Coordinated universal time may now drift up to 3,600 seconds from Earth rotation time before any correction, a threshold that at current rates may not be reached for thousands of years. Continuous UTC takes effect on May 20, 2027. Read the full story and its sources.

World · Materials

Cornell researchers switched graphene's magnetism with a voltage. What makes the result more than a laboratory curiosity?

The switch is nonvolatile: the magnetic state persists after the voltage is removed, which is exactly the property memory technology is built on. The voltage slides four atomic layers into a new stacking pattern. Read the full story and its sources.

Too powerful to touch: Sudan's war keeps pointing at Abu Dhabi, and nobody acts

UN investigators say a network tied to the Emirates has fed weapons, drones and fighters to the RSF. Amnesty found the hardware on the ground. Abu Dhabi denies all of it, and between a record oil field and a football club found guilty on 114 charges, no institution has yet laid a glove on the state at the centre of the story.
