Wainwright, Alberta, pinned where this story happened, with every other place-led Indeks story.
See it on The Indeks MapA serious incident on the training area at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright sparked a major fire on Saturday afternoon, and the defence minister has confirmed there have been both fatalities and injuries. No numbers have been released, and officials have given no cause, with casualty figures held back while families are notified. Until that changes, everything else about this story has to be read with the gap in mind.
Wainwright RCMP were called at about 4 p.m. local time to reports of a fire in a training area on the base, about 210 kilometres southeast of Edmonton. High winds carried the blaze beyond the base fence into the Municipal District of Wainwright, where it spread rapidly. What began inside the fence did not stay there, and a base emergency became a regional one within hours.
Prime Minister Mark Carney said a serious incident creating a major fire had occurred at the base. Defence Minister David McGuinty called the situation “very, very active and delicate” and said he could not recall an incident like this in recent memory. Alberta's premier, Danielle Smith, joined Carney in expressing condolences as the provincial and federal governments coordinated with responders.
Firefighters from multiple jurisdictions responded, with the Canadian Armed Forces coordinating with federal, provincial and local authorities, and the town of Wainwright providing hospital and firefighting support. No evacuation orders have been issued. The RCMP is involved in the investigation; officials have not confirmed an explosion or any cause, and unconfirmed claims circulating on social media have not been used in this report. The investigation now has to answer the only question that matters, which is what happened in that training area on Saturday afternoon.
CFB Wainwright is one of Canada's busiest army bases, home to the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre and the 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre. It is where much of the army learns the dangerous parts of its job, which is precisely why an incident there lands the way this one has, well beyond one community in Alberta.
