At least 18 killed in a Houthi strike on a Yemen training camp

Three ballistic missiles hit a government military training camp in Shabwa province during morning training, according to Reuters, in one of the deadliest single strikes on Yemeni government forces in months.

At least 18 people were killed on Monday when the Iran aligned Houthis attacked a Yemeni government military training camp in Shabwa province, Reuters reported, citing government and medical sources. The strike was carried out with three ballistic missiles during morning training.

A note on the sourcing, because it matters with a story like this: the toll and the details come from a single wire report by Reuters, carried the same day in the Just Security Early Edition roundup of that reporting. The figures are attributed to government and medical sources on the ground, not independently verified by a second newsroom, and they may change as more information comes out of Shabwa.

Even on those cautious terms, the strike stands out. It is one of the deadliest single attacks on Yemeni government forces in months, and it was not a skirmish at a checkpoint. Ballistic missiles used against a training camp, in numbers, point to planning and to a target chosen for effect as much as for damage.

The wider read is uncomfortable for anyone hoping Yemen stays a contained conflict. Government forces inside Yemen remain exposed to the Houthis' heaviest weapons at home, at the same time as Houthi strikes have been reaching well beyond Yemen's borders. A movement that can do both is not winding down. It is advertising range in two directions at once.
