See it on The Indeks MapThe new NBA season starts the way every season should, with a ceremony the winners have waited all summer for. At Madison Square Garden tonight, the New York Knicks will receive their championship rings and raise a banner in front of a sellout crowd, and then, with the confetti barely swept, they have to play the most fascinating visiting team in the league. Opening night is a tripleheader on NBC and Peacock, and for once the scheduling gods have stacked all three games with a storyline that could carry a month.
The visitors are the story inside the story. LeBron James and Jaylen Brown make their Philadelphia 76ers debuts tonight, Brown having arrived from Boston in the trade that sent Paul George the other way. Around Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, Philadelphia has assembled perhaps the most star heavy roster in basketball, four players who each expect the ball in the biggest moments. Nobody doubts the talent. Everything about the 76ers this season reduces to one question: can stars this large share one offence, and can Embiid's body hold up long enough for the answer to matter?
The early game has its own weight. In Detroit, the Pistons host Boston in a meeting of last season's top two seeds in the East. Detroit went 60-22, the franchise's best record since 2005-06, won its first playoff series since 2008, and brings back its whole young core of Cade Cunningham, Jalen Duren and Ausar Thompson. Boston won 56 games despite Jayson Tatum missing most of the season, and the intrigue tonight is simple: Tatum fronts the bill again for a Celtics team that has been rebuilt around him on the fly, with Paul George added and a point to prove.
The nightcap takes the league west. Oklahoma City, the standard the rest of the conference measures itself against, visits San Antonio at 9:30 p.m. Eastern, where the Spurs have quietly added veteran forward Tobias Harris from Detroit to a young core that expects to matter in April this time. Three arenas, three home crowds, and by the end of the night the league will have its first real footage of what this season is actually about.
Opening night proves nothing in an 82 game season, and it is worth saying so before the overreactions begin. But it does set the questions that the next six months will answer. Does New York's continuity, the rarest asset in the modern league, beat Philadelphia's collection of stars? Was Detroit's rise the start of an era or one loud year? Does the road in the West still run through Oklahoma City? Tonight we get theatre, not verdicts. Theatre is enough. The season is back.
