Chelsea, City and a verdict the whole league argued about
The football was good this weekend, and almost none of the conversation was about it. A verdict on 115 charges has reset the terms of Manchester City's season, and every result now gets read through it.

Start with the verdict, because everything else sits in its shadow. An independent commission found Manchester City guilty of 114 of the 115 charges brought against the club by the Premier League over its financial rules. City deny wrongdoing and have lodged an appeal, so nothing is settled yet: no sanction has been set, and the season will run for months under a question nobody can answer. Head coach Enzo Maresca's public line has been calm. He said the club's players and supporters have grown “more together” since the ruling landed, and insisted he feels no additional stress.
On the pitch, City are playing like a side with something to prove. Their first match after the verdict was a 3-0 win over Liverpool that kept them top of the table, the kind of controlled performance that suggests the noise has sharpened them rather than scattered them. The one shadow on the week was a 4-2 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, a reminder that this team can still be got at on a bad night in Europe.
Chelsea supplied the late drama, and it was all Pedro Neto. At Everton's Hill Dickinson Stadium, Neto scored seconds after the restart and again in the 90th minute to give Chelsea a 2-0 win and end Everton's unbeaten start to the season. For a side that has made a habit of complicating its own life, this was the opposite: patient for an hour, then ruthless.
The win came at a real cost, though. Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez was stretchered off after a clash of heads with Jarrad Branthwaite and taken to hospital, with Mike Penders coming on for his Premier League debut. Chelsea took the points and made the statement. They also left with a goalkeeping problem, and how long Martínez is out will decide what this result actually means.
