The win that cost Paris: Kvaratskhelia tears his ACL on PSG's best night of the season

PSG confirmed on Wednesday that Kvaratskhelia ruptured the ACL in his right knee during the 4-2 win over Barcelona, with surgery to come and six to nine months the usual road back. Dembele and Marquinhos are out for weeks too.

It was, by any normal accounting, a famous night. Paris Saint-Germain beat Barcelona 4-2 at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday, made it three wins from three and sat on top of the Champions League league phase, every inch the two time defending champions. Then Wednesday's medical update arrived, and the night was repriced. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during the match, the club confirmed, and he will have surgery in the coming days.

The moment itself looked like the kind players walk away from. Just before the hour, Kvaratskhelia twisted his knee, could not put any weight on the leg and had to be helped from the pitch. PSG gave no return timetable, and there is no gentle way to fill that silence. Recovery from ACL surgery usually runs between six and nine months. Six months points to late April, if everything goes perfectly. Nine runs past the end of the season, which closes with the final on June 5, 2027.

He was not the only casualty of the night, just the catastrophic one. Ousmane Dembele, the Ballon d'Or holder, came off inside twenty minutes with a left thigh injury, and captain Marquinhos followed with a right thigh injury of his own. The club said both will remain under treatment for the next few weeks, which is the standard fog of early prognosis, but weeks is a different country from months. Paris can plan around the first two. The third absence rewrites the plan.

What they are losing is specific. Kvaratskhelia was voted last season's best player in this competition, scored 10 goals with 6 assists in that title defence, and has 29 goals and 20 assists in 91 games for the club. He wrote his own verdict on Instagram: "Before every game I asked God to let me leave the pitch healthy. But it was in vain." The depth behind him is real. Desire Doue opened the scoring against Barcelona and took the player of the match award, and Fabian Ruiz finished the 4-2 off in the 86th minute. PSG travel to Lyon in the league on Sunday and to Villarreal in Europe on November 3 with a squad built to absorb injuries.

Our call is that it absorbs the league phase comfortably and still tops the table, because depth is exactly what the new format rewards. The knockout rounds are a different test. Kvaratskhelia is the player who turns a locked two legged tie into space, and without him the champions' margin in a semi final shrinks to almost nothing. Unless Doue grows into that role by spring, the defence of this title probably ended on its best night, in the gap between a 4-2 win and a scan result.

6 to 9 months: the typical recovery from ACL surgery, which puts Kvaratskhelia's return between late April and beyond the final
