League Two in 2010, Milan beaten 3-0 in 2026: Bournemouth's European fairytale is real

Bournemouth beat seven time European champions AC Milan 3-0 at the Vitality Stadium for three wins from three in their first ever European campaign, the first English side to start that way since Sunderland in 1973.

Eight minutes in, the penalty went in and the story folded in on itself. Justin Kluivert rolled it home after VAR spotted a handball by Koni De Winter, and with that one kick Bournemouth's number 19 scored against AC Milan, the club his father Patrick beat with the winning goal in a Champions League final 31 years and 151 days earlier. By full time at the Vitality Stadium it was 3-0, three wins from three in a debut European campaign, and the only fluke on the night was the scoreline's suggestion that Milan had ever been in the game.

Milan ended it themselves before half time. At a corner, their goalkeeper and captain Mike Maignan shoved Tyler Adams in the face, collected a straight red card and gave away a second penalty, which Marcus Tavernier converted on 32 minutes. Maignan is the first Milan goalkeeper ever sent off in a European game, a small piece of history nobody at the San Siro will frame. Two penalties, a red card and a two goal deficit inside 32 minutes is not bad luck. It is a side losing its head in a ground that holds barely eleven thousand people and used to host League Two football, as recently as 2010.

Amine Adli curled in a free kick on 84 minutes to finish it, and the numbers underneath the night are the ones that will travel. Bournemouth have beaten Real Sociedad away, Sturm Graz at home and now Milan, nine points from nine, sitting third in the Europa League table on Sky Sports' account, and they are the first English team to win their first three European games at the start of a campaign since Sunderland managed it in 1973. This is, remember, the club's third European fixture, ever.

The managers said the two halves of it plainly. Marco Rose called it a big night for the club and said he was very proud of his players. Ruben Amorim, on the Milan side, was blunt: the game was over after 20 minutes, he said, we killed our game. Next comes the fixture that frames everything, Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, a league game that a month ago would have been the biggest date in Bournemouth's autumn and now arrives as the follow up act to beating Milan.

Our call is that the favourites tag the result invites is a game too early, and also beside the point. What three wins from three actually buys is margin: Bournemouth can now lose a night in this league phase and still expect to matter in the spring, which for a first campaign is the whole prize. The test is no longer whether they belong in Europe. It is whether a squad built for one game a week can keep this level when the Sundays start biting, beginning at Old Trafford. On Thursday's evidence, with a system that pressed Milan into beating themselves, they will not be the ones blinking first.
