Samsung banked 107 trillion won in a single quarter, a first for any tech company, and its shares fell anyway

Operating profit of 107.4 trillion won, about 80 billion dollars, rose 783 percent on a year earlier as AI memory did almost all the work. HBM4 revenue more than tripled, and Samsung says its 2027 HBM supply is already sold out.

There is a number in Samsung's full third quarter results, released in Seoul on Thursday, that no technology company had reached before. Operating profit came in at 107.4 trillion won, about 80 billion dollars, for the July to September period, past 100 trillion won in a single quarter for the first time and up 783 percent from 12.2 trillion won a year earlier. Revenue was 195.3 trillion won. It was Samsung's fourth record quarter in a row, and the detailed breakdown confirmed what the early October estimate had promised: this is now a memory chip story with a very large electronics company attached.

The concentration is the striking part. The chip division earned 106.5 trillion won of the 107.4 trillion total, which means the rest of Samsung, the phones, the displays, the appliances, contributed almost nothing by comparison in this quarter. Artificial intelligence infrastructure is the reason. Demand for the memory that sits beside AI processors has outrun supply across DRAM, NAND and high bandwidth memory at once, tight supplies have lifted prices, and Samsung's newest product is where the squeeze bites hardest. Revenue from HBM4, its latest generation of high bandwidth memory, more than tripled from the previous quarter and accounted for about 60 percent of all HBM revenue, a jump that carried Samsung to the HBM market share it had been chasing, in line with its standing in the wider DRAM market.

Samsung's own outlook says the squeeze is not easing. The company told investors the chip supply shortage would deepen next year, that negotiations for its 2027 HBM supply have finished at its target prices, and that the volume is already sold out, with big customers still asking for more. It has signed long term supply agreements with 10 major customers and is talking to 10 more, and it plans record capital spending of 84.4 trillion won this year, most of it on semiconductors, to build capacity that will still take years to reach the market. Its rival across Seoul, SK Hynix, reported strong results and a similar outlook a day earlier, so the two companies that dominate memory are now telling the same story in the same week: the AI buildout needs more chips than the industry can make.

And yet the shares fell on the day the record landed. That reaction is not really about this quarter, which beat the company's own early estimate. It is about what a result like this does to the bar. When a chip division earns 106.5 trillion won and brokers still call it light against raised expectations, investors are pricing the peak as much as the profit, asking how long AI spending at this pace can last and what happens to memory prices when the new capacity finally arrives. Samsung is exposed to that question more than anyone, because so much of the record rests on one cycle, however extraordinary the cycle looks right now.

Our call is that the sold out 2027 order book changes what this record means. A normal memory peak is a price spike that customers endure and then escape, and the share price is right to flinch at those. A peak where next year's supply is already contracted at target prices, and where long term agreements are being signed years out, behaves more like a floor being poured under earnings than a spike being ridden. Watch the fourth quarter chip number against the expectations that made 106.5 trillion won look disappointing: if Samsung clears that bar while the 2027 book stays sold out, Thursday's fall will read as the market doubting a record it should have believed.

Operating profit 107.4 trillion won on revenue of 195.3 trillion won, with the chip division earning 106.5 trillion won of the total and HBM4 at about 60 percent of HBM revenue
